Easy Chocolate Avocado Mousse

Not only does this decadent, creamy avocado chocolate mousse taste just like the real deal, but it’s also extremely healthy and easy to make.

I don’t compile a lot of sweet dessert recipes, but if I do make a dessert recipe, you best believe it’s got to be special to make it into the blog.

This avocado chocolate mousse never fails to catch anybody – and I mean ANYBODY – by surprise. Like… a dessert made of avocado? Are you for real?

Think of it as your favorite, most decadent chocolate mousse, minus the complication of egg yolks, whipped egg whites, and getting proportions right. Adding avocados is the lifehack you didn’t know you needed. Say hello to a smooth and creamy healthy dessert.

I’m obsessed with this chocolate avocado mousse because:

  • Not only does it taste just like the real deal, but it’s also healthy. Who knew a rich and creamy dessert could also be nutritious? I’m all for it.
  • It is a no-bake recipe, which means there’s no heat involved, no risk of burning anything, and of course, less washing to do. All it takes is 10 minutes in a food processor and you’re done!
  • If you’ve ever tried making real chocolate mousse, you’ll know it can get quite complicated. It’s like MasterChef level stuff. But this recipe is a breeze. It’s so easy to make that any home cook can prepare this sophisticated dessert without much experience under their belt.

So, are you ready to make this avocado chocolate dessert with me? Let’s dive in!

Is This Recipe Really Healthy?

It’s hard to believe that a chocolatey dessert can be healthy, but trust me, this dessert is as healthy as can be. It is paleo, vegan, gluten-free, keto-friendly, and uses whole foods.

With its natural and whole-food ingredients, avocado chocolate mousse contains healthy fats and natural sweeteners. No added sugars or preservatives. It’s definitely higher in calories, but its fats come from fresh avocados and coconut cream.

There’s also cocoa, which has antioxidants that can help lower the risk of heart diseases. Instead of sugar, we are also using bananas in this recipe to sweeten it.

Of course, like I always say about all food and diets: Everything in moderation. I won’t recommend having this dessert every night of the week, but it’s good to enjoy some sweetness once in a while.

Recipe Ingredients

  • Avocados - Peel 2 ripe avocados and remove the pits. Avocados are a no-brainer in this recipe. They’re loaded with good nutrients! The smooth and creamy texture of avocado makes it the ideal ingredient for making healthy mousse-style desserts.
  • Coconut cream - Coconut cream acts as the substitute for full-fat milk, making this recipe dairy-free and vegan. Measure 4 tablespoons of coconut cream (or, use coconut milk as a replacement).
  • Bananas - Bananas are amazing natural sweeteners for just about anything. They are fibrous and full of vitamins. We will use frozen bananas here so that they make the mousse cold without the need to refrigerate it first.
  • Cocoa - Measure ⅓ cup of cocoa powder. Other recipes use dark chocolate bars, which also works, but I much prefer cocoa because their powdery texture blends and mixes easily with the others. Alternatively, swap with ⅓ cup of melted chocolate.
  • Vanilla extract - For some delicious sweet flavor that desserts are known for, let’s add 2 teaspoons of high-quality vanilla extract.
  • Salt - Add 1 teaspoon of salt. This helps balance out the sweet flavors.
  • Optional toppings: We cannot forget toppings. I like to use fresh strawberries, raspberries, blueberries, and whipped cream (omit if going vegan).

How to Make Chocolate Avocado Mousse

You will need a food processor or a high-speed blender for this recipe. Remember how I said it’s a no-bake dessert that just about anyone can make? I meant it!

Step One: Add all the ingredients into a food processor. Blend until smooth.

Step Two: Taste the chocolate avocado mousse, adding pure maple syrup or salt to taste.

Step Three: To serve, spoon some mousse into a small glass jar, a mug, or a small bowl. Top with frozen berries and whipped cream. Serve immediately.

This recipe goes great after lunch, dinner, or as a teatime snack. Make it for Valentine’s Day, Christmas, Thanksgiving, or any special occasion and I’m sure everyone will be begging for more.

Storage Instructions

I fully support the idea of making large batches of this vegan chocolate mousse in advance. When we have guests come over, it’s a fabulous crowd-pleaser to pull out of the fridge, all ready to go. The kids love it, too! And so do I, especially when my sweet tooth cravings kick in.

The mousse will keep in the refrigerator for up to 4 days and in the freezer for up to 4 months. Portion the mousse into individual servings first and store in a freezer-safe container covered with a lid. Before serving, simply defrost overnight in the refrigerator.

I hope you and your loved ones enjoy this delicious dessert!
