Welcome to Cooking With Cassandra. I’m so happy you are here! I’m a proud wife, dog mom, food lovin’ Canadian girl, former TV reality show personality, wine lover and on a mission to make living a healthy + balanced lifestyle easy for everyone.

Here you will find simple, delicious recipes that are tested and perfected, tips to work smarter not harder in the kitchen + lifestyle advice on changing your mindset on healthy eating from restriction and overwhelm to balance and enjoyment! My goal is to provide you with inspiration, whether it’s in your kitchen or in your life.

Where It All Started

My health journey started after being on Big Brother Canada. As a HouseGuest on the show, I was notoriously bad at our weekly competitions which meant I ended up being a have-not more often than not. So I ended up eating slop most weeks. 😒

* Slop (noun): A repulsive, foul-smelling “food” made from oats and water – seasoned with unflavored protein powders to make it nutritionally sound. Eat from a literal garbage tin for full effect.

If you watched me on Big Brother, you saw it. And I’m not talking about slop. I’m talking about… The 20-pound weight gain…on national TV. I was eating slop 3x a day for well over a month in total. (And drenching it in maple syrup to make it edible.) I wasn’t doing ANY physical activity for months during my time on the show.. And let’s just say I wasn’t getting the best sleep of my life either. I could feel the weight gain, but it didn’t bother me at first. Until I got out and started to read the negative comments online. Believe it or not, being called a cow by total strangers can really take a hit to your self-confidence. I knew I needed to make major changes in my life. I needed to find a sustainable way of eating. 

I needed a LIFESTYLE change, not a fad diet.

So I went out on my own health journey. I started investing time into learning how to cook. I started changing my eating habits and saw my body change in front of my eyes. I started working on my mindset to focus on the good things in my life instead of dwelling on what wasn’t going my way. It didn’t happen overnight. Slow and steady won the race for me. 

Healthy living is about balance and enjoyment. It’s not about dieting and restriction. Goodbye calorie counting. Eat the chocolate cake. 

Everything in moderation.

To be completely honest, I wasn’t always excited about cooking. Actually, I didn’t know how to cook at all! Six years ago when I moved in with my now husband Walt, it became a necessity – “must eat to live.” So I dove into the internet spending hours going through recipes, reading reviews, and making notes on each new recipe I was planning to make. I made it my mission to learn how to cook delicious meals. Within 6 months of ditching freezer dinners and making them homemade, I lost 20 pounds and fell in love with cooking! My husband likes to say I have gone from “toast to turkeys”!

 

All this to say… If I can cook, you can cook! I truly believe that together we can cook delicious and easy meals for every occasion.

What You Will Find Here

My hope is to inspire you in the kitchen by sharing with you easy-to-follow, delicious recipes and Kitchen Tips that every home cook needs to know! The ingredients I use are simple and easily accessible; no hoity-toity here! I am all about balance so you will find everything from the super healthy to the super indulgent! 30-minute dinners to weekend pastas that are worth the extra time!  Count on finding plenty of entertaining and holiday meals, appetizers, breakfast options, desserts, one pan meals and so much more! You won’t have to spend any more time wondering, “What’s for dinner?” I have you covered!

Over the last few years, I have put countless hours in the kitchen. I’ve tested and re-tested recipes more times than I can count. Suffered a few burnt fingers. Chopped enough vegetables to feed an army. I’ve had late nights dedicated to writing blog posts and sharing knowledge I wish I had as a resource when learning how to cook – BUT it is all worth it today!

I’m just like you

Like so many others, I’ve felt uncomfortable in my own skin. Burned out. Fed up with the “I’ll start on Monday” dieting that only lasts till Wednesday. I know what it’s like to want to be healthy inside and out. But you don’t do it because it just feels overwhelming – and you really don’t have time for one more thing. I hear you and that is exactly why I created this website. To share what I have learned on my journey, in hopes to help you on yours.

My goal is to help you to start living a healthy lifestyle way faster than I did. Showing you a simpler recipe for success, both in and out of the kitchen.

It’s about creating a balanced lifestyle that works for you. You know, one that you look forward to living, not one that makes you feel like part of your life is missing. Life is meant to be enjoyed. I’m grateful for the opportunity to share it all with you! Thank you so much for being here!

Healthy is a feeling and a state of mind, not a number on the scale. One of the most important lessons I’ve learned over the years is that health should be approached in a holistic way. I’m here to show you how. You won’t find calorie counting or feeling guilty about treating yourself to your favorite dessert here! Life is meant to be enjoyed. It is all about balance!

Mindset

Your mindset has the power to completely transform your life in a positive (or negative) way, the choice is yours! Having a positive mindset is the most important aspect of living a happy and fulfilled life. I am here to share with you strategies I learned while getting my Bachelor’s Degree in Psychology and from my own personal experiences.
