Hi there, friends!
Iโm so excited to share the amazing time we had celebrating my father-in-law Daveโs 80th birthday. We turned our cabin into party central for 11 days, and it was nothing short of epic. From decor to delicious recipes, I’ve got all the details for you. Whether you’re planning a milestone celebration or just love a good party, I hope this gives you some inspiration!
The Decor
I went all out with the decor, making sure every piece added a special touch. Here are the links to everything I used:
Posters:
- The Welcome Sign: A warm welcome for everyone.
- Loved For 80 Years Poster: Celebrating 80 years of love.
- The Road To 80 Poster: A fun look back at the journey to 80.
- 1944 Birthday Newspaper Poster: Filled with Canadian facts, but there are options for my American friends too.
DIY Projects:
- Sexiest Man Alive Poster: I made this on Canva, highlighting fun and memorable moments about Dave. It was a huge hit!
- Margarita Signature Cocktail Poster: Another Canva creation that fit perfectly with our margarita theme.
Setting the Table
For the main event on his birthday, I set a table that made Dave feel extra special:
- Way Back In 1944 Place Cards: A nostalgic touch for each place setting.
- Custom Happy Birthday Napkins: Added a personalized flair to our celebration.
- Fiesta, Siesta, Tequila, Repeat Napkins: Perfect for our margarita theme.
- Save Water Drink Margs Napkins: Because who doesnโt love a good margarita?
Party Extras
These little details made the party even more fun:
- Custom Tequila Glasses: A hit with our tequila-loving family.
- Custom Face Straws: Each straw had a different face of Dave, making it a fun way to distinguish everyoneโs drink.
- Funny Pins: Customized to say “Dave’s 80th Birthday – This Guy Needs A Drink” with Daveโs photo.
- Vintage 1944 Balloons
- Customized Beer Cozies: A fun and practical party favor that everyone loved.
- Cupcake Toppers: Used them in bruschetta, and they were a hit!
Banners
- Custom Face Banner: I made two โ one from 40 years ago and one with a current photo.
- Personalized 80th Birthday Banner: This banner featured photos of Dave throughout his life, including one with his late wife, Gail. Gail, who is Waltโs mom, passed away three years ago from pancreatic cancer. Incorporating her memory into the celebration was a heartfelt reminder of her presence and truly added a touching element to the party.
- Dave’s Life Banner: Showcased Daveโs journey from age 20 to present.
- Tequila Bar Banner: A staple at our parties!

Make-Ahead Tips
I love hosting parties, but I also love enjoying them! Here are my tips to make your party prep easier and ensure you spend more time with your guests and less time in the kitchen:
- Chicken Quesadillas: Cook and shred the chicken before the party. Store it in an airtight container in the fridge. When you’re ready to make the quesadillas, simply assemble and cook โ easy peasy!
- Stew and Soup: I completely make these ahead of time and freeze them. On the day of the party, just pull them out of the freezer the night before to thaw. Heat them up in a pot, and youโve got a warm, hearty meal ready to go with minimal effort.
- Cheese: Shred all your cheese before the party. It saves so much time during prep, and you can store it in the fridge until you need it.
- Garlic: Peel and store your garlic cloves in an airtight container in the fridge. Prepped garlic lasts up to five days and makes cooking a breeze.
Throwing this party for Dave was a labor of love and seeing the joy on his face made every moment worth it. I hope you find these ideas helpful for your next celebration. Let me know if you try any of these recipes or decor tips โ Iโd love to hear about your experiences!
Happy celebrating!
Cheers,
Cassandra
